H.T. Leary Scholarship

The Western Region Jail Association is offering two scholarships honoring Mr. H. T. Leary. Mr. Leary was instrumental in helping establish the Western Region Jail Association and continues to be a strong supporter of the organization.

The scholarship is available to eligible students who are currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, or technical school, or who have been accepted to enroll in such an institution. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for consideration, the student must:

  1. Be a member of the WESTERN REGION JAIL ASSOCIATION or an immediate family member (son, daughter, spouse) of a member.
  2. The student must submit a completed application to the WESTERN REGION JAIL ASSOCIATION Scholarship Committee no later than TBD 2025. HT Leary Scholarship Application is in PDF form. The completed application must be returned to Captain Brian M. Geiser, Scholarship Committee Chairperson, Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office, 340 West Campbell Avenue, Roanoke, Virginia 24016, or emailed to brian.geiser@roanokeva.gov prior to the deadline (TBD).
  3. The student must be enrolled in at least three (3) semester hours in an accredited college, university, or technical school to be considered for reimbursement. Classes are not limited to criminal justice subjects.
  4. The student may be required to appear for a personal interview before the Scholarship Committee.
  5. The decision of the Scholarship Committee is final.

2023 H. T. Leary Scholarship Winners

The winners of the 2023 H. T. Leary Scholarships are:

  • Sydney Haddox – Daughter of Major Kimberly Miniclier – Retired Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office. Sydney is a graduate of William Byrd High School and will be attending Virginia Tech Pamplin College of Business as a Marketing Management major.

  • Jayden Smith – Son of Deputy Janet Smith – Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office. Jayden is a graduate of Northside High School and will be attending the University of North Carolina/Charlotte majoring in Sports Media.

2022 H. T. Leary Scholarship Winners

The winners of the 2022 H. T. Leary Scholarships are:

  • Dalton Lockridge – Son of B. Keith Lockridge – Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority. Dalton is a graduate of Randolph-Henry High School and attending Hampton-Sydney College to major in Government, with a minor in National Security.

  • Cierra Trueheart – Daughter of Toni Trueheart – New River Valley Regional Jail. Cierra is a graduate of Pulaski County High School, and has been accepted to attend James Madison University to major in Health Science.

      • Jacob March – Son of Dylan March – Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority. Jacob is a graduate of Rustburg High School, and has been accepted to attend Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets AFROTC to major in General Engineering.

      • Erin Tucker – Daughter of Stacy Tucker – Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority. Erin is a graduate of Altavista Combined School, and has been accepted to attend Liberty University to major in Business Administration.

      • Iman Calloway – daughter of Randall & Ernestine Calloway. Ernestine works for the Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority. Iman will be going to Old Dominion University studying Health Sciences.
      • Angel Monroe – daughter of Sterling & Angelia Monroe. Angelia works for the Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority – Amherst. Angel will be going to the University of Virginia studying Biology. Thank-you letter.
      • Logan Shepherd – daughter of Timothy & Tammy Shepherd. Timothy works for the Western Virginia Regional Jail. Logan will be going to New River Community College studying Business Management.
