This session explores key leadership concepts, emphasizing the importance of understanding your “Why.” Learn how communicating your purpose effectively motivates teams and fosters collaboration. We’ll also examine the differences between transactional and transformational leadership styles.11 a.m. – 12 p.m. – Stress Management: Surviving the Long Haul

This class focuses on hypervigilance and its long-term effects, providing valuable insights for individuals working in high-stress environments. Learn strategies for managing stress and maintaining well-being.12 noon – Lunch
1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. – Crisis De-EscalationInstructor: Director Dennis Lambert, New River Criminal Justice Training Academy
This critical session focuses on verbal de-escalation techniques. Learn to recognize early signs of physical aggression and develop skills to prevent situations from escalating. Foster safer environments and reduce the likelihood of harmful confrontations.3:30 – 3:40 – Closing Remarks – President
About the Instructors
Doug Scales
Doug started his law enforcement career in 1998. During his 27-year career he has served as a police officer, deputy, jailor, school resource officer, and Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team member. Also, during this time, he has worked at the Southwest Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy where he served a training coordinator, senior training coordinate, and Assistant Director. Doug now works for the Department of Criminal Justice Services where he serves as a Field Services Coordinator in the Southwest Virginia area, serving New River Criminal Justice Training and Southwest Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy and their member agencies.
Dennis Lambert
Dennis began his law enforcement career with the Virginia Beach Police Department and later served as Chief of Police for the Town of Dublin. A near-lethal encounter led him to become a passionate advocate for Crisis Intervention Training (CIT). He is one of the original New River Valley CIT faculty and has trained extensively across Virginia and beyond.

Any staff working in a local or regional jail.
Partial In-service Credit (PIC) for Virginia correctional officers will be available.
