Summer Training – Here’s the Lineup:

10 a.m. – 12 p.m. – Recruitment and Retention of the Current Generation: What does it take?

Instructor: Dr. Amanda Trent, Liberty University. This is a comprehensive two-hour class designed for corrections staff seeking to enhance their recruitment and retention efforts. This class looks into the unique characteristics of Generation Z, the newest recruits in the workforce, and how to effectively attract and retain them within the corrections community. Through interactive discussions participants will explore strategies for leveraging digital platforms, showcasing growth opportunities, fostering inclusive environments, providing mentorship and support, and implementing recognition and feedback mechanisms. By the end of the class, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary for a resilient and engaged team that contributes to the mission of public safety.

12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. – Lunch is provided by our sponsors for all attendees at no charge

1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. – Basic Gang Awareness Training

Michael Duke, Statewide Gang / STG Coordinator VADOC. The Basic Gang Awareness Training aims to equip participants with essential knowledge and awareness regarding the presence of gangs in both jails and the broader community. The training highlights the top three gangs identified within the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) while focusing on recognizing key identifiers associated with gang membership. Through interactive classroom discussions, participants will learn to list and identify three gang identifiers commonly used by gang members. Furthermore, they will gain insight into the specific identifiers prevalent among gangs in the Commonwealth of Virginia. By the end of the training, participants will have a heightened awareness of the gang presence in their surroundings and be better equipped to identify and respond to gang-related activities effectively.
